Description
This lookout, located at the halfway point over Neahkahnie Mountain, affords spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Looking out, one senses the curve of the earth. Looking straight down, you see the powerful surf of Oregon's Pacific crashing against the rocks below.
'Neahkahnie' translates as the place of the Supreme Deity.
"There is a legend that claims the mountain conceals a lost treasure, hidden by Spanish sailors in the late 16th century. There are various versions, with the most common involving a group of sailors that carried a chest up the hillside and buried it there. One of the sailors, so the legend goes, murdered one of the men and threw his body on top of the treasure. Native people — who, in most versions of the story were watching the activity closely — would not disturb a grave, so securing the treasure under the dead man would prevent the treasure from being recovered."
